TracFone Prepaid Wireless Plans and Deals
Tracfone’s prepaid cellular phone service is really a standout among prepaid services available in the States. It’s got many of the standard benefits of other prepaid services—no credit check, no monthly bills, no extra add-ons like taxes or activation fees—but it’s got a few extra perks, as well.

Most Tracfone models include free voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, free long-distance and roaming. This is pretty standard in most prepaid services. It does, however, also include a couple of things you won’t see in other services.
Your minutes won’t ever expire—in most other plans, your minutes last as long as a year before expiring. Tracfone also displays your balance right on your phone’s screen, so you can easily keep track of how much time you’re using and budget your usage accordingly.
As with other prepaid services, you buy a card and phone to get yourself started—you don’t have to sign a contract, and if you want to stop using the service there’s no deactivation fee. With Tracfone, you buy a box which includes the phone, a charger, a battery, 60 days of active service, and 10 minutes of free airtime. You can activate your phone online or by calling a toll-free number.
To keep your airtime active, there are three options you can choose from: pay-as-you-go, a monthly payment, or a yearly payment. All three are flexible and economical, and they are each the best choice for a different situation.
Pay-As-You-Go
There is a good choice if, for example, you’re going to be out of town for a while, need to take a phone with you, and won’t be able to pay a regular bill delivered to your home. You buy phone cards, use the minutes, then refill as they get low. You pay for minutes you use, and there are no extra taxes or fees.
Monthly
Monthly payments charge $14.99 a month, with no deactivation fee. You get 30 free minutes each month. With this monthly plan, you do have to buy additional cards for additional minutes—but there’s an extra perk: you double your minutes with each card you buy. If you buy a 400-minute card, you get 800 minutes.
Yearly
Yearly payments cost $99.95 or $129.99 per year. The cheaper option includes 250 free minutes, and the pricier one—really only about $30 more—gives you 400 free minutes—almost twice the airtime. With the $129.99 plan, you also get double minutes, just as you do with the monthly plan.
Both monthly and yearly charges are a good deal
if you’re looking for an emergencies-only plan that’s
economical, or you want to ensure your phone is always active but
don’t want to pay the high monthly price of a traditional cell phone
plan. TracFone isn’t
as widely known
in the U.S. as giants like T-Mobile and Verizon, but its services are just as
good—and in many
ways better. It’s a company that deserves to be at the top of
your list for flexible prepaid wireless options. Read a full review on
